In keeping with tradition, an artist will be drawing and decorating live in the canteen of Aarhus School of Architecture the first week of the academic year. This event inspires and introduces the international student competition Drawing of the Year, held for the sixth consecutive year.
This year, you can see Isobel Taylor drawing live daily from Monday 3 September to Friday 7 September. On 7 September there will be an artist talk at 14.30.
Isobel Taylor is from Cornwall, in the southwest of England, she holds a BA from Oxford Brooked University and completed her Master’s degree at Aarhus School of Architecture in June 2018 – with her hand-drawn Master’s project Imagining a Fish & Chip by the Pool.
Space for dreaming
About her drawing in the canteen, Isobel Taylor writes:
“Where is the space for dreaming? The first goldfish appeared in the thesis project in the spring inside 21 Fish & Chip Shops. Now, the second fish inhabits the First Drawing of the Year in the fall along a 12 meter section of drawing on the wall. [In the summer in between, the fish was on holiday.] The act of drawing as a way of seeing creates a freedom to wonder and daydream as the life of the drawing, and the imagined possibilities of a future building being projected within it, overlaps with the life of the waking mind. Through this exploration of dreaming and drawing, the relationship between the dreaming of a line and the line of a dream is investigated, both on paper and within the imagination. The perspective of The Second Fish sits on both sides of the projection. The desire to separate the two realms of the idea and the line in a question of reality becomes irrelevant, instead the drawing and the dreaming translates the imaginal into the real.”
