THE GRAND GESTURE IN THE SIMPLE ACT
Johansen Skovsted Architects is a young award-winning architecture office (Kronprinsparrets Stjernedryspris (2016), the Three-year Work Grant of The Danish Arts Foundation (2017), AD Design Award (2018), the Häuser Award (2020), the Utzon Statuette (2021)) which delivers concrete, site-specific and cost-conscious architecture.
The office was founded by Søren Johansen and Sebastian Skovsted in 2014. They both have substantial experience from working as practicing architects with project development from sketching stage to finished building.
Johansen Skovsted Architects believes architecture is about what is present – in nature, at the site and in terms of the ways we build. They build in a resource-conscious manner, and their architectural expression is based on the material, the structure, and the detail.
A straightforward intervention may prove to be both rich and complex when juxtaposed with that which is specific to the place. And existing structures are seen not only as a gift but as an architectural potential. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, they strive to unite and develop specific construction techniques and the central ideas of projects together with users, building owners, stakeholders and authorities – who are brought into projects at an early stage to discover the core of the project.
