In the Library basement, you find the school’s materials archive MLAB (Material Lab).
MLAB exhibits the building and design industry’s newest materials, such as self-cleaning tiles, hemp insulation, bendywood and textiles from Kvadrat. Many of the chosen building materials are based on new technologies based on nature itself – sea grass is, for instance, used for isolation purposes. More advanced technologies include materials developed from composites of plastics and wood fiber, which is today a waste material, thus becoming an up-cycle material of high quality.
MLAB is perfect for everyone who is interested in innovative and sustainable materials. This is where you find inspiration and actually touch the materials that will most likely be used by the architects of tomorrow. The materials are available for everyone, especially the city’s architectural practices, to see, touch and smell.
A digital database is also connected with Material Lab. Here you find information on whether all the materials of MLAB are available. At present more than 200 different materials are recorded in the database.
MLAB also exhibits prototypes, books, and videos about new materials. The collection also includes art, arts and crafts, and experimental work created by the school’s researchers and students.
The collection is organised by Curator Karen Kjærgaard, who has adapted the presentation of the materials to the facilities in the library’s cellar. The collection of materials is continuously updated with new materials, works of art, etc.
The inclusion of new materials will be advertised publicly, and new literature about the materials will be made available.
MLAB is also available in relations to workshops, counseling, and collaboration with the research labs and private companies.
