A NEW SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE IS TAKING SHAPE<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Not just a new school, but a laboratory for architecture<\/h4>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>

In September 2013 the Aarhus School of Architecture entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education and Science to start the planning of a new school of architecture that would house the school\u2019s facilities in a new, up-to-date setting.<\/p>\n

It has now been agreed that the school is to be built at Godsbanearealet, a disused railway goods area which over the coming years will be converted into a centre for arts, culture and creativity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>

An architectural laboratory<\/h5>\n

\u201cOur current setting is completely outdated in the context of today\u2019s demands, in relation to both teaching and to research\u201d, says Rector Torben Nielsen. And he continues:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a clear wish to not simply build a new school, but to develop a laboratory for architecture. A raw structure in which we can develop, experiment, test, and cooperate, and come up with new interesting proposals for the future \u2013 both in relation to teaching and research and in relation to built architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n

A competition in two stages<\/h5>\n

A model for an architectural competition in two stages has been agreed on; it combines an international open ideas competition followed by a traditional project contest. Subsequently the project will be offered as a turkey contract with reverse tendering \u2013 based on an expanded outline proposal. The consulting team that won the ideas competition will be affiliated with the turnkey consultant as their adviser and will, consequently, be responsible for carrying out the project from idea to reality.<\/p>\n

Inviting in the city and the world<\/h5>\n

\u201cThe challenge will, first and foremost, be to create a place for architectural thinking and architectural experiments. A place where we can invite in the city and the world, and where we can work together on providing visual and physical proposals for the architecture of tomorrow.\u201d A place focusing on our students and with sufficient space for building and producing prototypes.<\/p>\n

Facts<\/h5>\n

The project owner will be the Danish Building & Property Agency<\/a>; the School\u2019s building owner consultant will be the architectural firm Kim Christiansen<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Signal Arkitekter have carried out a pre-programming of the school\u2019s overall space requirements and functional requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>
