His mother studied psychology, and Jonathan Foote has created a professional life that resembles a synthesis of his parents\u2019 interests: his research and teaching at the Aarhus School of Architecture are characterized by connections between the workshop and the library.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a bachelor\u2019s degree in history, he has always been interested in the roots of architecture\u2014yet he also feels at home in the school\u2019s workshops due to a strong interest in materials such as metal, wood, and in recent years also stone and marble.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur workshops and their staff are world-class, and I am very interested in the way they support fabrication both digitally, analogically, and manually.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_two_fifth  av-animated-generic bottom-to-top  av-hide-on-mobile  flex_column_div   avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_three_fifth  el_before_av_two_fifth  \" style='margin-top:12%!important; margin-bottom:12%!important; border-radius:0px; '><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_two_fifth  av-animated-generic bottom-to-top  av-hide-on-mobile  flex_column_div first  avia-builder-el-10  el_after_av_two_fifth  el_before_av_three_fifth  \" style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:12%!important; '><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_three_fifth  av-animated-generic bottom-to-top  flex_column_div   avia-builder-el-11  el_after_av_two_fifth  el_before_av_three_fifth  \" style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:12%!important; background: #ffffff; padding:9%!important; background-color:#ffffff; border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock ao-dark ao-medium-text-paragraf av_inherit_color '  style='color:#0a0a0a; '  itemprop=\"text\" ><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the OPEN Architecture Festival in 2024, audiences could see him using a hammer and chisel to create a crack through a large marble block from Norway. And in 2018, he spent three weeks at an abandoned marble quarry in the remote Maarmorilik in Greenland, accompanied only by a faithful snow hare and colleague, associate professor Robert Trempe. <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/523701403\">Watch a short film about the trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In search of education<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nearly ten years as an associate professor at the Aarhus School of Architecture have given Jonathan a foothold in a career that began with some turbulence and has also been shaped by chance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was his grandfather who arranged interviews and visits to a number of educational institutions in Virginia in the mid-1990s, and the young man took the Greyhound bus to Blacksburg and fell in love with the workshops at Virginia Tech School of Architecture. Architecture was thus not on his radar until the practical dimension of the discipline became clear to him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was lucky, because Virginia Tech\u2019s approach was very much about thinking through making, in contrast to many other architecture schools. If I hadn\u2019t visited that particular school, I would probably have chosen a completely different path.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_three_fifth  av-animated-generic bottom-to-top  flex_column_div first  avia-builder-el-13  el_after_av_three_fifth  el_before_av_two_fifth  \" style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:12%!important; background: #ffffff; padding:9%!important; background-color:#ffffff; border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock ao-dark ao-medium-text-paragraf av_inherit_color '  style='color:#0a0a0a; '  itemprop=\"text\" ><h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Into practice<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After completing his master\u2019s degree, he used his connections to get in touch with a small architecture firm in Washington, D.C., where over the next three years he learned everything about how architecture is made.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe designed smaller, often public projects such as parks or office renovations. My tasks changed on a daily basis, and in that way I learned everything from how to communicate with the various stakeholders in the process to which drawings need to be produced and submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Into academia<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there came a time when Jonathan Foote became \u201cantsy,\u201d as he puts it\u2014impatient for something new. Virginia Tech had a campus in Washington, D.C. with good workshops. One day Jonathan showed up at the workshop and asked if they needed volunteers. They did not, but they did need someone to teach design-build. That became his entry into teaching and his occupation for the following three years. After that, he completed a PhD focusing on full-scale architectural drawings in the 16th century, particularly Michelangelo\u2019s drawings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt that time, you drew your project, for example a column, at full scale and gave the drawing to the craftsman who was to execute it. It was a demanding role, caught between pressures from above and below, and it turned out to be a short stop on his journey.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4356\" data-end=\"4660\">After about a year, he once again reached out to his network\u2014and once again it paid off. He packed his car and drove four days across the United States to the next chapter of his career: a temporary position at Cal Poly in California. And in the midst of an already hectic period, serious illness struck.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4662\" data-end=\"4848\">\u201cOne morning, my girlfriend asked what that lump on my neck was. It turned out to be cancer, and I had to undergo two months of chemotherapy while also applying for permanent positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"fznjiu\" data-start=\"4855\" data-end=\"4894\">Stability and Immersion in Aarhus<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4895\" data-end=\"5060\">In 2016, he sat for a job interview at the Aarhus School of Architecture without a single hair on his head and with a catheter in his arm. It became a turning point.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5062\" data-end=\"5263\">Since then, he has held a permanent position in Aarhus, where he can pursue his interest in architectural history in the school\u2019s excellent library\u2014and change into work clothes when the workshops call.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5265\" data-end=\"5564\">\u201cI discovered, among other things through the research project <em data-start=\"5328\" data-end=\"5350\">Material Imagination<\/em>, that research here at the school could both bring different people together around a shared effort and serve as a focal point for my various interests. Through the research project <em data-start=\"5760\" data-end=\"5780\">Ecologies of Stone<\/em>, he investigates, among other things, the role stone can play as a building material in a modern context\u2014possibly as a replacement for concrete.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5927\" data-end=\"6194\">\u201cStone is also one of the most interesting materials from a historical perspective, because it always comes from a specific place, and that creates a network of connections and associations. And the project has allowed me and my colleagues to continue making things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6196\" data-end=\"6643\">As part of the project, the researchers produce prototypes\u2014for example, columns or flooring. They have produced columns in both marble and larvikite. Common to these is that they have both a technological aspect and a critical or intellectual dimension, such as circularity or low-energy processing. And, fortunately for Jonathan Foote, they also have a historical aspect. He is currently working on an article about <em data-start=\"6613\" data-end=\"6642\">the aesthetics of the rough<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6645\" data-end=\"7133\">\u201cIt has been a very fruitful project, and we\u2019ve also had an impact on practice. For example, we connected a quarry in Larvik with British engineers, so that larvikite is now being used in construction projects in London. I\u2019m also invited to architecture firms to talk about the work. It has allowed me to remain active across multiple fields, which may be a common thread in all of this: it\u2019s where I function best. They bring out these drawings for me, and they are absolutely extraordinary. It\u2019s something I cannot get in the workshop. But the two worlds are connected through their materiality. When I worked on my PhD, I spent three days at Casa Buonarroti studying Michelangelo\u2019s drawings. That was a great joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7777\" data-end=\"8100\">The joy of history and the joy of materiality still drive the work of the man who once headed to the auto repair shop on South 10th Street after school. The old workshop has since been demolished.
