This something

“… light is not the only precondition of visibility. Darkness is another. True, light and darkness are asymmetrical. Light is a precondition for seeing, at all, whereas darkness (interacting with light) is a precondition for our seeing something” Gernot Böhme.

This is the overall frame of this PhD project. The project seeks to study the relation between light and darkness and the way they interact with form. In that sense the project focuses on a development of forms that shows light – and thereby also the darkness – the shadow.

In order to make light emerge, there must be a material that light can be processed on. This material creates the difference, which makes it possible for the light to become visible, as Böhme also describes in the quote above.

It is this something – this difference that in this project, forms the transition between indoors and outdoors. The wall provides an inside, a border, and the opening establishes a relationship with the outside world. The light opening is the lens that creates a view and thereby makes both a connection to an outside as well as the opening brings an outside which is the light – into the space.

It is this transition or zone that the project focuses on. The space seen from the inside towards the outside, but the only focus is on the form of the space inside and not on the façade of the outside.

The books

The project is evolving through a reflecting practice. And thereby using both an analog working method as well as writings. The analog works consist of models, drawings and photographs.

The structure of the project and its process is produced in a series of books – in different sizes, formats and materials. The books are made continuously and are thereby connected. They establish both an overview when they are looked at in total – but also fragments, when seen as only one by one.
