Beginning to study on a higher education programme can be quite a change. You may feel uncertain about the requirements and expectations for you as a student.

In many ways student life at Aarhus School of Architecture is very special. The architectural education is project-based, and you will be spending much of your time studying in the school’s studios and in the workshop facilities. This makes for a very special study environment, but it is also demanding for students.

If you are a new student, it is important that you experience a safe study environment. For this reason you are included in the school’s mentoring system. This means an older student will be your mentor throughout your first year of study.

Your mentor helps you settle in when you start studying, presents you to the culture of studying at the school and gives you advice on how to tackle study-related challenges – academic as well as personal.

The scheme offers both group meetings, where a mentor meets six to seven students to exchange experiences, and individual guidance when required.

About the mentoring system

In the autumn of 2019, the school initiated a mentoring programme in which 20 older students serve as mentors for new students. The mentors have, as a minimum, completed three semesters of their studies and have subsequently participated in a mentoring course enabling them to help new students in the best possible way.

One mentor has seven mentees. The mentees are, as a rule, invited to two group meetings and one individual meeting each semester. The system is a pilot project which is constantly being evaluated.

If you have questions about the scheme, you are welcome to contact HR Consultant Mie Have Thomasen, who coordinates the mentoring system.
