In contrast to the present building industry that relies on standardised timber products, irregular wood parts often appear in traditional building types. In some cases, particularly shaped wood components are necessary for a specific type of building, as the root knees appear in Norwegian stave churches. In other cases, as in Danish tobacco barns, the construction type allows irregular parts to be incorporated instead of more straight members.
Incorporating irregular wood in architectural construction could have several positive impacts. A large part of the material is utilised, thereby reducing the amount of waste wood, which in many cases would be combusted for energy production and increasing CO2 sequestration in the building. Furthermore, by utilising irregular wood parts and a broader range of wood species, it is possible to encourage a more sustainable forestry industry with larger biodiversity.
Digital scanning and robotic manufacturing enable the handling of irregular materials in 3D modelling and the manufacturing process. The tree trunk will be used for making a prototype to illuminate the way towards exploiting the full potential of organically shaped round wood. It is the goal to demonstrate a harmonious integration of natural forms into contemporary construction, contributing to the creation of a new kind of architecture.

Experience KONTUR’s spring exhibition 2024 in the ONSITE Gallery.
Your Nokia phone is making a loud noise, it’s a text from your mom who wants you to come home. It’s Easter 2008 and you are going to paint eggs with your siblings. It’s not 2008 anymore, and this Easter, instead of painting eggs, you can be a part of Konturs spring exhibition about NOSTALGIA!
Nostalgia is remembering forward and thinking backwards. It’s a longing or a wistful affection for a period in the past. Kind of like window shopping through your brain. Never entering a memory because then the nostalgia can turn into something else, like sentimentality or melancholy. Which is a whole different feeling – or is it?
The feeling of nostalgia is a feeling that’s hard to reenact. Because sometimes the memory is blurred by time. It could be that the feeling of looking back is romanticized. That actually the memory is fake, it’s fake nostalgia.
Exhibition opening is the 11th of April in Onsite Gallery – everyone is welcome.
Time
April 11 (Thursday) - May 5 (Sunday)

– – – PROGRAM – – –
/ MORGEN /
9.00-9.10 – Intro
9.10-9.40 – Filmfremvisning & kort debat / Strata incognita v. Grandeza studio (ES)
9.40-10.05 – Case study: Soil stories v. Stefan Darlan Boris
i Aarhus.
10.05-10.20 – Pause
10.20-11.30 – Paneldebat #1: Convivial digging IN materials
Deltagere:
– Jonathan Foote, lektor, Arkitektskolen Aarhus
– Reværk Arkitektur (DK)
– Asha Sumra, ph.d.-studerende, Arkitektskolen Aarhus
11.30-12.15: Keynote: Thinking Through Soil v. Seth Denizen (US)
v. Tine Galatius (Kok og madkunstner, DK)
/ EFTERMIDDAG /
13.15-14.30: Paneldebat #2: Convivial digging IN assemblages
Deltagere:
– Heidi Merrild, erhvervs-ph.d.-studerende, Arkitektskolen Aarhus
– Lynn Hyun Kieffer, ph.d.-studerende, Arkitektskolen Aarhus
– Janna Vollrath (DE)
14.30-14.45: Pause
14.45-16.00: Paneldebat #3: Convivial digging IN territories
Deltagere:
– Katrina Wiberg, lektor, Arkitektskolen Aarhus
– Anders Bjørn Møller, adjunkt, Aarhus Universitet
– Hongxia Pu, ph.d.-studerende, Københavns Universitet
/ AFSLUTNING /
16:00-17.00 Performance & drinks
