Hahn Lavsen Architects was founded in 2019 by architects Caroline Hahn and Ebbe Lavsen. The studio explores traditional building traditions and methods to face the challenges in the building industry.
Where most of us have gotten used to building with materials from around the globe, HahnLavsen is inspired by historic approaches to ressources, where materials were found and processed locally from what was at hand. Especially in areas like Thy, Denmark, where the studio is located, it is prevalent practice to use beach stones, sand, reed, lime, and peat to build a house solely from locally accessible materials.
The simple fisherman’s houses in Agger is a testimony to simple, natural materials without resourceful processing works as durable building materials that can be reused again and again – now as well as way back when. Such traditions express the scarcity that does not reflect today’s accustomed consumer society. By focusing on resources and energy use, the thinking is more urgent and relevant than ever. With their practise, Hahn Lavsen Architects experiments to gain a geographically bound architecture and use the term terroir about their works. Just as a special taste and character of a specific wine is connected to the area and grape vine from which it has originated, the studio wishes to create architecture that reflects its surroundings – a sort of super-local architecture.
At Open Architecture Day, Hahn Lavsen Architects joins the panel discussion “100% Green” together with Rumgehør, Spant Studio, KONDENS and Tideland Studio. The panel goes Behind the Scenes of starting up: How do you balance vision and architectural dreams while, at the same time, creating a sustainable business? The architects on stage represent five totally different approaches to architecture, however they all have a profound care for the environment at the heart of the business.
