Tiago Borges will discuss the cultural and technological history of the greenhouse typology, ranging from the 19th to the 20th centuries. Paul Bouet will discuss the history of energy and climate devices and how they affect domestic typologies and ways of living. Together they will converse on the use and potentials of energy and their role in constructing environments.

Tiago Borges: His recently PhD dissertation Neither House nor Garden. Greenhouses as Domestic Space and the Question of Climatic Typology examines the dynamics of types and typological transfer, with a primary focus on the historical interplay between greenhouses and domestic spaces.

Paul Bouet: In his forthcoming book Domesticating Solar Energy: Decolonization and Environmentalism in Postwar France (Zurich, gta Verlag), he traces the history of solar energy research in postwar France. The book shows how it emerged from experiments by architects and scientists in North and West Africa at the end of the colonial period, and how solar architecture was later explored in response to 1970s environmentalism and the oil crisis, before this alternative was ultimately marginalized.
