Few living danish architects have had a more significant impact on urban development globally than Jan Gehl, which is why Aarhus School of Architecture is happy to announce the hiring of Jan Gehl as an adjunct professor.
Jan Gehl has spent 40 years researching city quality and urban environment, and that has, amongst other things, resulted in the following books: “Livet mellem husene” (1971) and Byer for Mennesker” (2010),” Bylivsstudier” (2013) and latest” Den menneskelige dimension” (2021).
“I have worked with the humanistic dimension in architecture and urban planning. To make humans visible and for professionals to take the needs and behaviour of humans into account when creating architecture and urban planning”, Jan Gehl says.
The professor will be a part of Studio 1D in the school, and Jan Gehl will contribute with lectures and guidance of the students when they return for a well-deserved holiday. Jan Gehl will also take part in pin-ups in the studio.
Studio 1D is titled “Desirable densities” and focuses on how to create an attractive and sustainable city.
Even though Jan Gehl will celebrate his 86th birthday in September, he is by no means done teaching the younger generations of architects:
“I am excited to start, and I take great pleasure in working with the next generations of architects on our common trade. We must translate what happens in the schools, so it doesn’t end up being only theoretical exercises. The goal is actually to end up with better cities in the real world”, Jan Gehl says. Other than now being an adjunct professor at the Aarhus School of Architecture, Jan Gehl is also an honorary citizen in Sydney, an honorary doctor at the universities in Edinburgh, Toronto, Varna and Halifax and an honorary member of the union of architects in Denmark, England, Scotland, Ireland, USA and Canada.
