Photobook Week Aarhus 2019

Photobook Week Aarhus celebrates its sixth edition from 3 to 6 October 2019. The festival is an open forum for discussions on the photobook as a medium.

This year Photobook Week Aarhus and Art Weekend Aarhus will be cooperating and several activities and exhibitions will be featured on both platforms.

Photobook Week Aarhus’ main venue is the library at Aarhus School of Architecture. The festival programme is dedicated to talks and exhibitions about publishing, researching, distributing, buying, trading, and collecting photobooks. You can also purchase new as well as vintage photobooks at the festival.

A significant part of Photobook Week Aarhus 2019 will focus on the relationship between architecture, photography and photobooks. As Anne Elisabeth Toft, Associate Professor at Aarhus School of Architecture and one of the curators of Photobook Week Aarhus, explains:

“The festival takes its point of departure in the legendary photo exhibition “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape” from 1975. This exhibition, curated by William Jenkins of the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, in Rochester, New York, introduced a whole new approach to architecture – and landscape photography. The exhibition not only led to a renewed interest in and understanding of the genre of documentary photography, it also brought about a new and expanded view on landscape architecture; a view which has been crucial ever since. Common to many of the photographers whose photographs were featured at the exhibition was their interest in and documentation of the urban and of urban and industrial landscapes undergoing transformation. The invited photographers included among others: Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Stephen Shore as well as Bernd and Hilla Becher.”
Photobook Week Aarhus will follow up on cultural currents and single historical events that led to the emergence of the new topographic photography in the United States and Europe. In talks and panel discussions, the festival will also shed light on the significance of the new topographic photography for landscape photography and landscape architecture in the Anthropocene.
