Discover the hidden stories of Sydhavnen

Join us for the first day of exhibition, city walk, and workshop on Friday 6 March.

Students from Aarhus School of Architecture will be working with the historical narratives of the grounds of a former abattoir in the area south of Jægergårdsgade. On 6 March they invite the citizens of Aarhus to an exhibition opening, city walk and workshop focusing on this area.

The Sydhavnen area, Aarhus

On 6 March, the citizens of Aarhus can get an insight into what is hidden in the grounds of the former abattoir at Sydhavnen. Students from Aarhus School of Architecture will be working with the area south of Jægergårdsgade for three days leading up to the event. At the event, the hidden narratives the location contains by virtue of its history will be revealed.

‘It will all be about emphasising the central narrative of the cultural environment. In our work in the days leading up to the exhibition opening. But also in the subsequent workshop involving the citizens of Aarhus’, says Mathilde Kirkegaard. Mathilde is a PhD student at Aarhus School of Architecture.

On 6 March, the citizens of Aarhus will have an opportunity to examine the works produced by our students. Next, they can join a city walk or take part in a workshop – both of which based on the area. We will encourage visitors to take photos of what they think is characteristic of the area and compose a note about the continued development of the area.

A catalogue for the politicians

The photos and notes will be exhibited the day of the event. Later they will be collected as a catalogue that shows the place as it appears when seen through the eyes of the citizens. The catalogue will be made available to everyone with an interest in the subject. It will also be sent to the Aarhus Municipality planning department.

The project is the result of a collaboration between Foreningen Sydhavnen and Aarhus School of Architecture. The work is part of Mathilde Kirkegaard’s PhD project on cultural environments. The students who are involved in the project are doing a four-year Master’s degree programme for working professionals on the subject: cultural environments and urban transformation.
