The construction of Denmark’s first newly built school of architecture is well underway. You can see this for yourself at Godsbanearealerne, near Carl Blochs Gade in central Aarhus. You can now go all the way up to the top floor of the building, at third-floor height – even if the walls and roofs are still missing. Several of the large concrete cores of the building have been cast. And you can even now get a good idea of the views of the neighbourhood as seen through the building.
‘We have chosen to cast much of the concrete on the building site. This gives the concrete a handsome finish and a more varied surface than pre-cast elements would. You can see it’s a living material. And the beautiful craftsmanship becomes evident’, says Kristine Leth Juul, Prorector at Aarhus School of Architecture.
Recently, a so-called mock-up room with light fixtures and ventilation systems was constructed to give you an idea of what a finished room in the building will look like.
The first large steel staircase of seven planned for the building will be installed this January. Work will then proceed on the carcass, which will be completed by the end of May. The topping out ceremony is scheduled for June this year.
