Applications are now open for the programme, which is aimed at professionals working in the field of architectural heritage who wish to strengthen their expertise in a unique Nordic academic environment.
NORDMAK is a postgraduate programme for graduates working with architectural heritage. Over the course of 2.5 years, students explore topics including theories of restoration, transformation and heritage management, investigation and documentation, value-based approaches, as well as processes and argumentation. The programme is part-time, allowing students to combine their studies with professional work.
Teaching takes place in turn in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, bringing students into contact with lecturers and fellow students from across the Nordic region. NORDMAK is based at Aarhus School of Architecture and is run in close collaboration with the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, the Alvar Aalto Foundation and Aalto University in Helsinki.
Architectural heritage across the Nordic region
For Professor Mogens A. Morgen, Academic Director of NORDMAK, the Nordic collaboration is one of the programme’s key strengths.
“I look forward to welcoming a new cohort to NORDMAK. We face major challenges when it comes to taking care of our architectural heritage while also developing our societies. It is important that we learn from one another across the Nordic countries, where we share many traditions and face some of the same challenges.”
The exchange of different professional and national perspectives is a central part of the programme. Students bring experience from different areas of the heritage field and have the opportunity to examine their own professional practice in a broader Nordic context.
“Architectural heritage is more important than ever. It is not only a question of what we should preserve, but also of how we can use the values we already have as a resource in the development of our built environment. This calls for new perspectives and close dialogue between research and practice,” says Nina Ventzel Riis, Study Leader of NORDMAK.
Strengthening professional practice
NORDMAK bridges the gap between theory and practice. Students can, for example, use cases and challenges from their own work as a starting point, connecting the academic content of the programme directly to their professional practice.
Compulsory on-campus teaching is limited to eight consecutive days per semester, followed by assignments completed individually and in groups.
The programme is aimed at professionals with a relevant educational background and at least two years of relevant work experience in the field of architectural heritage.
