In post-socialist countries, the cultural and ideological erasure of the legacy of socialism through gestures of removing, neglecting or redesigning modernist architecture created between 1945-1989 (or 1991) is well known. The legacy of unfinished projects of the same period is an equally complex problem.
The lecture will outline two initiatives for the reuse of gigantic unfinished projects that were or still are urban controversies: Dom Mladih (House of the Youth) in Split (Croatia), and Dom Revolucije (House of the Revolution) in Niškić (Montenegro). In both cases, a radical rearrangement of the program structure of highly specialized typologies is tested, while physical interventions are minimized.
The lecture will be followed by a panel debate.
Maroje Mrduljaš, PhD, is architect engaged in teaching, researching, designing, writing, editing, curating andfilmmaking. He contributed to the exhibition projects in various institutions including MoMA NY, SAM Basel, Venice Architecture Biennale, and published in Archithese, A U, Vesper and elsewhere. Maroje is assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb.
