Exhibition Concept

In architecture we often describe a holistic design standpoint. A belief that the parts are intimately interconnected and explicable only through reference to a whole, a standpoint relying on the whole being more than the sum of its parts (inspired in readings of Aristotle). An atomistic design standpoint, however, takes the opposite view, that the parts or components comprise the whole and substantially complete it, in an understanding of components forming the whole and the whole being formed by components. Yet, the majority of the built environment today 1s systematically constructed from components failing to reach beyond themselves.

How does solidarity translate into aesthetic gestures, and who or what should be gestured?
How can aesthetic values drive the formulation of whole components, from the early tectonic considerations, choice of materials and compositions to improved engagement on behalf of architecture at an urban scale? And, what do such solidary components look like, how can they reach beyond themselves, and which forms of transdisciplinary collaboration do they entail?

Solidary Components offers a real-life laboratory for transdisciplinary development and testing 1:1 of new collaborative architectures for a sustainable future. Exploring the intersection of artistic knowledge, phenomenology, material engineering, and system thinking, focus is upon re-inventing the synergetic and reparative potential of the smallest components of construction towards viable wholes.

Each of the curated teams have been asked to design and manufacture a Solidary Component 1:1 from an atomistic design standpoint. A
fragment of a wall (indoor) and/or a facade (outdoor). An architectural component that engages In real synergies of human society and needs for our natural environment, by designing for the benefit of both.

Exhibition concept developed in collaboration with Professor Marie Frier Hvejsel and curated by Karen Kjaergaard
