Mies Lies
Exhibition by Office Blommen.
The relationship between building and image is never simply representational. The Seagram Building by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe makes this condition clear. Its bronze cladding appears to express a precise structural order, yet the elements that carry this image are not themselves the primary structure.
The building therefore presents an image of its own construction. It suggests that architecture is never only what carries, encloses, or occupies space, but also the image it constructs of itself. The building becomes both structure and its own image, leaving the distinction between what it is and what it appears to be unresolved.
