Racialised Spaces – Intersectionality in Architecture

Join the next panel of our series on Gender and Diversity in Architecture, called Racialised Spaces – Intersectionality in Architecture.

It is a hybrid event that you can attend physically or register on zoom for.

Some of the questions we seek to address are:

“Intersectionality considers the ways in which different forms and norms of social stratification, such as class, race, religion, disability and sexual orientation, overlap with gender. How does intersectionality relate to design, architecture, landscape, urbanism and spatial justice? In what ways do intersectional gender theories and practices impact architecture and the production and occupation of spaces?”

Finally, Why does intersectionality matter in architecture and landscape urbanism?”

We have three great panellists to contribute to this interdisciplinary discussion on intersectionality in architecture (practice and research):
(format: 15min presentation each from the panellists and a general Q&A discussion afterwards):

• Dorthe Staunæs – Professor of Social Psychology at Aarhus University, DK (School of Education)
  Dorthe’s work focuses on human becoming/subjectivity in the intersection of affects, diversity, educational organisation and politics. Current research issues include diversity, gender, race/racialisation, and intersectionality, focusing on the impact of “racialised spaces” in Denmark.
• Ellen Braae – Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at Copenhagen University, DK
  Ellen’s teaching and research focus on strategic design/transformation of urbanised areas with special attention towards climate adaptation, cultural heritage, history of urban development and social housing in the welfare state of Denmark, with a focus on the recent development of the Gellerup housing project (listed a “ghetto” by the Danish government).
• Aysha Amin – Co-founder of the culture and art space Andromeda8220, the food cooperative, Smag à la Gellerup and Almen Modstand Aarhus.
  Aysha works in the field of community and architecture, art and activism, researching and documenting the social and physical changes of Gellerup with collaborative design and social media strategies. Aysha engages with many other social and creative initiatives in Aarhus, focusing on working with intersectional frameworks in her works.
