Architecture needs to become more inventive in suggesting creative alternatives to the usual methods of obtaining building materials.
Lately, architects and engineers from around the world have started experimenting with using stone as a load-bearing element in buildings, driven by a strong focus on sustainability.
Concurrently, there is growing interest in how pre-capitalist and indigenous societies interacted with the environment, where materials were often sourced in direct connection with local building traditions.
The Ecologies of Stone research network is exploring these issues.
Last week, the researchers visited the Lundhs quarry in Larvik. Associate Professor Bob Trempe took these photos during the visit.
