We have to improve our ability to understand and use existing cultural environments and the associated architectural heritage, for, on a wide range of parameters, preserving, transforming and developing location-specific properties is more sustainable than building new.
This is the ambitious agenda of Aarhus School of Architecture’s new research project, ‘Sustainable Cultural Environments’. Over the next three years, the project, which is supported by the philanthropic association Realdania, will explore how our valuable cultural environments and architectural heritage can today have an active role in a more sustainable development of our urban and rural areas. Both in terms of climate, economy and social sustainability.
The project will contribute to strengthening research into architectural heritage and cultural environments. And will, for the first time ever, study the role of cultural environments in sustainable planning. The aim of the research project is application-oriented. And the researchers will be working together with several municipalities and international research communities on research into cultural environments as wholes, as the elements that form part of them, into the way atmospheres and qualities are experienced, and into the importance of cultural environments to socially sustainable development in the areas.
The project runs from September 2022 to September 2025.
