Regenerative Building – Examples, Processes, and Narratives from an Ongoing Paradigm Shift

The aim of the project is to strengthen and influence the public debate on a regenerative transition of the construction sector through fact-based mappings and visual future scenarios derived from these mappings.

Society needs solutions that go beyond conventional sustainability thinking – solutions that not only minimise the environmental impact of buildings but actively regenerate our habitats. Regenerative principles are increasingly necessary drivers of a broader paradigm shift and of efforts to address the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss. This entails new perspectives on the relationship between the technosphere and the biosphere. Consequently, there is a need for in-depth analyses of what regenerative construction can be and how it can contribute to the required paradigm shift.

The Regenerative Construction project focuses on built examples and new design processes that may lead to a regenerative level of practice. The project is carried out through interdisciplinary collaboration with partners from the Aarhus Center for Regenerative Construction, as well as practitioners from municipalities and the construction industry.

The researchers address the following questions:

Which processes and indicators lead to regenerative solutions?
What opportunities exist within contemporary construction practice?
How can the paradigm shift be strengthened while maintaining and enhancing architectural and building quality?
Which design approaches can lead to a regenerative level, given limited resources and vulnerable habitats?

Through three work packages – including literature reviews, case analyses, and interviews – the researchers will identify:

Regenerative “lighthouse projects”;

Factors that enable and hinder the construction sector in reaching a regenerative level; and

Possible design and analytical processes that, with a certain degree of probability, can lead to a regenerative level, as well as visualisations and future scenarios for regenerative construction.

The project’s overall objective is to strengthen and influence the debate on a regenerative transition of the construction sector through fact-based mappings and visual future scenarios derived from these analyses.
