Event Details

“Over the last 50 years, several trends of environmental responsive architecture have developed out of grass-root movements, like so called solar architecture, passive solar buildings, earth buildings, active houses, upcycling buildings to mention only a few. For a long time, mainstream architects rejected these environmental responsive buildings referring to their ´ugliness´. This is remarkable in many ways and in particular raised the question, why a generally very self-confident profession did not do it better and combine environmental issues with less ugliness and the higher aesthetics they were asking for.
However, nowadays almost all architecture is called ´green´ or ´eco´ in some way or the other, no matter how aesthetic or how environmentally responsive it is.

The lecture raises the question, if there is anything such as a specific aesthetic of sustainable architecture, if environmental responsive architecture needs to express its agendas by specific aesthetics and what these aesthetics could be?
Furthermore, how substantial is the proclaimed positive environmental impact of many buildings, which nowadays obviously have a green aesthetic, like the ´vertical forests´ or buildings made of garbage? Last not least, how could aesthetics in a wider sense be a driver against overconsumption of resources?
Without consciously debating these questions, architects will not be able to contribute to a less destructive environment nor to an aesthetic, which overcomes the prevalent aesthetic poverty of mainstreams.”
