Photobook Week Aarhus 2020

Photobook Week Aarhus celebrates its seventh edition from 1 to 4 October 2020. The festival is an open forum for discussions on the photobook as a medium.
Like previous years, Photobook Week Aarhus and Art Weekend Aarhus will be cooperating and several activities and exhibitions will be featured on both platforms.

Photobook Week Aarhus’ main venues are the library at Aarhus School of Architecture and ARoS Aarhus Art Museum. The festival programme is dedicated to exhibitions and talks about publishing, researching, distributing, buying, trading, and collecting photobooks. You can also purchase new as well as vintage photobooks at the festival.
A significant part of Photobook Week Aarhus 2020 will focus on the relationship between architecture, photography and photobooks. As Anne Elisabeth Toft, Associate Professor at Aarhus School of Architecture and one of the curators of Photobook Week Aarhus, explains:

“The theme of Photobook Week Aarhus 2020 is ‘Seriality, Multiplicity and Repetition’. With this theme, we set the stage for a festival programme that focuses on the revolutionary methods and concepts of the Surrealists: collage techniques, mechanical manufacturing processes, the optical unconscious, objet trouvés and readymades. Exhibitions and presentations will shed light on works of among others Marcel Duchamp and André Breton, whose concepts have inspired generations of architects. Discussions will embrace the representation of the city and how, the surrealists used photography and the photobook to introduce new and modern readings of the urban.
The festival programme also includes a retrospective exhibition of the books and catalogs of renowned Danish photographer Per Bak Jensen, feature exhibitions on Norwegian photobooks, South African photobooks and Belgian photobooks as well as shortlisted photobook dummies from the 2020 Kassel Photobook Award.”
