Behind the Scenes / Behind the Screens (BTS/BTS) is a series of events reflecting on digital mediums and their relationship to the built environment. The programme unpacks ways to construct, organize, and understand immaterial infrastructures in architecture and adjacent disciplines. Didakteket is turned into a mixed reality, a liminal playground, offering lectures, film screenings, as well as real-time information feeds from the parallel activities of the festival.

Riders Not Heroes

A simple tap on a screen conceals a chain of sequenced operations, procedures, and invisible frictions: a complex system where physical, biological, mineral, chemical, and synthetic regimes are entangled in a short time-frame and across scales, from the microscopic to the planetary and beyond. What are the spatial forms of this emerging data-scape? Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli joins us online.

Model Home

Household robots rely on computer vision to navigate their environment, but a camera does not know what it is looking at. In order to recognise and understand the spaces and objects it encounters, a robot’s vision technology needs to learn about its future home. To this end, large datasets of 3D files are assembled into model homes, which ultimately are unable to represent the complexity of life itself. This gap between models of reality and the lived experience is referred to by scientist and philosopher Alfred Korzybski as ‘the map is not the territory’. If the map is not the territory, are the datasets the home? This talk speaks of the absurd and precarious state of the training datasets of home robots, using them as a way of entering a wider discussion about cohabitation with technology and an obsession of sorting the world into categories.

Touch Grass

Leah will join us online. Lamps in video games use real electricity, and all I want to do is touch grass. A communal ride and free dirt feast through mixed reality prototypes, including process and inspo, filtered by real-time simulations and shitposting tendencies. Operating at the intersection of futurity, failure and fun, and preoccupied with existing material, discarded muchness, and the literal muck of our existence rather than the seamlessness often associated with materials, interactions and everything digital, Leah will share bits of open worlds, interactions and environments they have been developing, in which ecology and technology are placed into communion within an unruly, self-fragilising spatial ecosystem.

Vegetal Images: Environments of Media, Plants, and Surfaces

This talk draws on Parikka’s on-going collaboration with artist Abelardo Gil-Fournier. Their joint writing and video projects on “surfaces” deal with environmental observation and the peculiar planetary aesthetics of images and environmental data. The talk features their research project Vegetal Images: Environments of Media, Plants, and Surfaces and includes a screening of their recent video work.
