The world needs architects with competencies for investigating and experimenting with technology and materials to find new solutions for the built environment. A sustainable architecture that inspires human life in balance with the planet’s resources. There is a need for radical changes in the architectural profession and the building industry to address the consequences of climate change and the lack of resources. We believe that a deep understanding of material properties and the creative use of all kinds of technologies are crucial parts of the solution.
Studio 2B encourages open-minded exploration of both analogue and digital workflows for exploring and processing materials. A large variety of representation tools are used for investigating the architectural futures that emerge through the studies of site, program and materials. The studies open a limitless field of opportunities for diverse and specific analytical realities, spatial conditions, formal expressions and detailed constructions.
This studio encourages students to use all forms of design methods from analogue sketching, modelling and material studies to digital design, simulation tools and robotic fabrication workflows. The ambition is to investigate the merits and limitations of each technology to better understand their influence and inspiration on design and learn from experimentation rather than arrive at resolved solutions. In our minds, an experimenting approach leads to the highest learning outcome and the highest level of competencies for taking part in the challenges involved in creating an architecture for the future. The studio will make heavy use of the school’s production workshops because, in our opinion, experiments only become truly interesting when they find their way into the physical world.
