EAAE/ARCC conference 2024
Aarhus School of Architecture 23 – 26 May 2024
The EAAE and ARCC joint conference brings together academic and practice-based researchers in architecture and related fields with educators, practitioners and students with research interests. We invite academic, design-driven, education-based and practice-embedded contributions that reflect on the uncharted territories that architecture is venturing into. We are particularly looking for presentations that explore how research and didactics can scrutinise, comprehend, take action, or react to these shifting conditions and their effects on academia, education, and professional practice.
The conference welcomes a broad range of perspectives and encourages interdisciplinary research approaches to the conference topic. Participants are encouraged to engage with the field’s emerging trends and challenges and share critical questions, innovative ideas, and solutions. This engagement can include discussions on the intersection of architecture with sustainability, society, social relations, technological developments, economic and cultural settings and social, spatial, material and aesthetic architectural responses. We also welcome historical and theoretical perspectives that explore and contextualise contemporary architectural practices and future implications for the architectural discipline.
We invite three types of contributions: Papers, Posters and Explorative Practices to promote different forms of architectural knowledge productions within the following topics:
1. Sustainable Architecture: This theme focuses on exploring sustainable practices, strategies, and technologies in architectural design. It encompasses topics such as resilient design, circular design, carbon capture, biodiversity, and climate change adaptation.
2. Innovative Materials and Construction: This theme delves into the examination of innovative materials and construction techniques in architecture. It includes topics like the use of replenishable materials, designing for disassembly, retrofitting buildings, and the incorporation of digital manufacturing techniques.
3. Ethics and Social Responsibility: This theme explores the ethical implications of architectural design and practice. It considers issues such as accessibility, social justice, inclusivity, environmental stewardship, multispecies cohabitation, and the ethical use of AI and data-driven design.
4. Disciplinary and interdisciplinary Approaches: This theme focuses on the characteristics and integration of diverse disciplines and perspectives in architectural education and practice. It encourages collaboration across fields and promotes holistic design solutions.
5. Future Architectural Education: This theme discusses the evolving nature of architectural education and research training. It encompasses topics such as the integration of emerging technologies, sustainable practices, and interdisciplinary approaches to prepare future architects and researchers.
6. Open Category: This category allows for any other topic of relevance to the conference theme.
Closed for submission
Academic papers will be selected based on a double-blind peer review of extended abstracts accompanied by images. Authors of accepted abstracts who present their work at the conference are invited to submit a full paper for a second peer review for inclusion in the conference proceedings. Feedback from the abstract review and conference presentation is expected to inform the final paper.
Posters will be selected based on a double blind peer review of a draft poster accompanied by up to ten images. Authors of accepted posters presenting their work at the conference are invited to submit a final poster for publication. The final poster will be an A1 portrait file that will be included in the conference proceedings. Feedback from the initial review is expected to inform the final poster.
The Call for Explorative Practices is an innovative conference format promoting alternative architectural knowledge production forms. The knowledge may be produced through artistic or professional practice, education, co-creative or user-involving processes. The presentation of Explorative Practices can involve alternative presentation formats that may involve artifacts, performances, or workshops.
Practices will be selected based on a double blind peer review of an explorative practice description accompanied by up to ten drawings, photos, and other forms of illustrations. The description should address the proposed practice and how it will contribute to the conference topic and the intended presentation format. Authors of accepted descriptions presenting their work at the conference are invited to submit a final description for publication in the conference proceedings. Feedback from the abstract review and conference presentation is expected to inform the final paper.
