When you begin your studies at the school, you will be given a key so you can come and go as you please 24 hours a day.
As a student, you will have a work table and free internet access at your disposal. As a point of departure, day-to-day studies take place in the school’s drawing offices and are supplemented with introductions, lectures, project presentations, and critique.
Expenses during your studies
Students at Aarhus School of Architecture should expect expenses for materials, course literature, study trips/excursions, and software. The stated amounts are an estimate of the maximum expenses you should expect during your education. Expenses can also be lower than the stated amounts and may vary between study programmes and semesters.
Computers and software
We expect you to have a laptop (PC/Mac) on the first day of the semester. There is no need for you to buy a new computer: start studying with the one you have. Along the way, you can then see if you need a new computer.
The programs we typically use are part of the Adobe Suite, which we expect you to be familiar with when you start studying, and Rhino, which you can purchase through the school’s webshop.
Study trips
There are one or more study trips during the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes. Expenses for study trips vary according to destination. But the total maximum cost is DKK 4000 for each trip.
Materials and course literature
Expenses for materials vary depending on the materials you choose for your projects. A good estimate is around DKK 1500 for materials and printing each semester. You may have more expenses during the Master’s project than during other semesters.
One place you can buy materials for your studies is through the store located at the school: Archi Tegn
Modes of studying and study hours
Your education comprises several different modes of teaching. You will encounter lectures and class-based teaching. Much of the work you do during your education will take place in the school’s studios, where you will have a table of your own. This is also where individual supervision takes place, and this is where you work with your fellow students.
The crits, or critiques, are an important part of your studies. This is where you present your work to fellow students and teachers, and sometimes to people from architectural practice, and receive feedback on your work.
Your education is a full-time study. This means you should expect to spend an average of about 42 hours per week on your studies. We recommend that you are present at the school during the daytime – this is when teaching takes place and you can get supervision. It is also during the daytime you get feedback and input from your fellow students in the studios – and grow your future professional network. For some teaching activities, attendance may be mandatory.
School Facilities
You will find literature of relevance to your projects in the school Library, where you can also keep up-to-date with the latest books and periodicals in architecture, town planning, and design. And you can build models of your projects at the Fabrication Facilities.
The canteen is a popular gathering place when you need a break from your studies – for a cup of coffee, something to eat or simply a relaxed chat with your fellow students. The week often ends with the Friday Bar, which is arranged by students themselves – who also regularly arrange bigger parties with DJs and live bands.
The students at the school are very active and facilitate many student-driven activities and student societies at the school.
In the interactive student handbook, you will find short answers to some of the frequently asked questions regarding the education, the school and facilities. And you will be able to find a guide as to where you can find what.
Being the city in Denmark with the highest concentration of students, Aarhus is a very attractive student city. The many educational institutions, which are located around the city centre, contribute to a young and vibrant atmosphere.
Our school is one important reason why Aarhus today has a reputation as a city where international architecture and design flourish. The many internationally recognised firms of architects and designers in the city have their origins in the school.
Living in Aarhus
Finding a place to live is an important part of starting a new life as a student, but with a 12,000 increase in the student population each year, accommodation in Aarhus is in great demand.
However, Aarhus Municipality offers a housing guarantee scheme, which guarantees accommodation to all new students who begin their studies in the fall semester.
