“Some architects and their firms focus on energy consumption, some on daylight, others on material use, healthy indoor environments or upcycling existing buildings and components – undoubtedly all relevant design aspects – and we hear a lot about social spaces, green roofs or green facades and energy roofs. Often these buildings are certified by professional institutions like LEED, DGNB or Cradle to Cradle.

Despite these very best intentions, the recently built environment looks to a large degree at least uninspiring and the results of so called green architecture seem rather poor, far away from any relevant impact in counteracting enormous challenges of climate change or biodiversity loss.

The lecture raises the question why is it like this ? Why is there so little and so unsubstantial progress in an environmental responsive architecture despite so much talk ?

Architecture cannot solve social problems nor environmental projects. But it can strongly contribute to and support solutions when both agendas, the social and the environment are connected. On the opposite, architecture easily and often generates social problems, for instance by gentrification, with unhealthy buildings and by destruction of global resources or local environments .

The lecture advocates for constructive choices which we have as professionals and presents examples which show alternatives. “
