Stephen Bates (UK) is an architect and educator. He co-founded Sergison Bates architects in 1996, completing award-winning projects across Europe, including the KANAL cultural centre in Brussels and the Leuven Performing Arts Quarter.

He has taught at leading institutions such as ETH Zurich, EPFL Lausanne, Harvard GSD, and since 2009, as Professor of Urbanism and Housing at TU Munich. His publications include Papers 1–3, Lineage and Legacy, From the Room to the City, and Tent poles in the ground. His work explores architecture at all scales—city-making to domesticity—designing buildings rooted in place, attentive to urban history, and addressing environmental, economic and social sustainability.
