Mark Thomas Smith wins 1st prize.
Friday 11 December the winners of the international student competition Drawing of the Year 2015 were revealed at Aarhus School of Architecture. This year’s theme was Sustainability Through Architecture. 120 students from 45 nations participated in the competition.
The first prize went to Mark Thomas Smith (UK).
According to the jury, the contributions to this year’s international student competition Drawing of the Year were characterised by their high quality and a great diversity in the interpretation of sustainable development. The school received contributions from countries as diverse as Brazil, India, China and the United States, as well as from a wide range of European countries.
The international jury has reviewed all the submitted drawings without knowing their origin.
The winning drawing was by Mark Thomas Smith (UK), who studies at Aarhus School of Architecture. Using the cartoon idiom and well-known buildings from London, Smith, in a cheerful and constructive manner, deals with the global problem of rising sea levels. The first prize is EUR 5000.
Thomas Sigsgaard Jensen, who also studies at Aarhus School of Architecture, won the second prize: EUR 2000. According to the jury, Thomas Sigsgaard Jensen’s drawing depicts the world’s complexity and our interdependence in relation to creating sustainable development.
The third prize, EUR 1000, went to Swedish Felicia Nino, a student at Bergen Arkitekthøgskole. Her traditional hand drawing draws attention to the fact that it is we who control the machines and the digital tools – not the other way around.
In addition to the three winning projects, the jury highlighted another eight projects from the UK, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, India, Poland and Romania.
