Drawing of the Year 2014

In 2014 the annual international student competition Drawing of the Year received more than 200 contributions from students in 32 different countries.

In 2014 the jury consisted of Jenny Osuldsen, from the architectural firm Snøhetta (Oslo), Morten Schmidt from schmidt, hammer, lassen architects and Rector Torben Nielsen from Aarhus School of Architecture.

The following 3 drawings were awarded first, second and third prize.

First Prize

The first Prize (EUR 5000) went to Olga Krukovskaya from Russia – for a drawing that in classic drawing technique discusses the relationship between restoration and modern architecture. The jury called it “an exceptional, professional and finely-detailed drawing in pencil, felt tip pen, and ink”. The drawing also received praise for its many far-reaching and relevant interpretations of the theme of the competition Transformation.

Second prize

The second prize (EUR 2000) went to Leonard Schrage from Germany – for a utopia, expressed in the form of a computer drawing/rendering. The drawing depicts habitation at sea and suggests new floating urban structures. The seabed apparently consists of former dry land; the world is flooded and transformed with clear references to Noah’s Ark. Yet a green forest and a daybreak heralds hope.

Third Prize

The third Prize (EUR 1000) went to Julie Guiraud from France. She combines a classical two-dimensional floor plan with a more abstract three-dimensional collage, challenging traditional urban plan drawing, which the jury found very “inspiring”. The technical aspects of the drawing are particularly fine and conducive to fantasy.

Special mentions

The competition is the result of a cooperation between Aarhus School of Architecture and schmidt / hammer / lassen architects, VOLA and the Danish Arts Foundation.
